98 Stories

The first short story in J.G. Ballard’s doorstopper of a collection starts things off with perhaps the best first sentence that I’ve read in ages:

I first met Jane Ciracylides during the Recess, the world slump of boredom, lethargy and high summer which carried us all so blissfully through ten unforgettable years, and I suppose that may have a lot to do with what went on between us.

I just can’t help, but languorously linger over that great phrase that seems apt to certain classes today, “the world slump of boredom, lethargy, and high summer.”
