Children Left Behind?

Posted in education, thinking about cities by echan on December 5, 2007

From Slashdot, I found out today that the Birmingham, Alabama school district is buying laptops from the One Laptop Per Child (“OLPC”) program for its own students. The OLPC was designed to narrow the technological gap between the developed and developing world by selling “cheap” laptops to third world governments. So, this forces me to wonder, is Birmingham’s purchase confirmation that we have so much educational inequality in the U.S. that some of our urban school districts need as much help as the Third World?
