Neo-Malthusians v. the Hedge Fund Crowd

Posted in Uncategorized by echan on September 13, 2007

There are two contradicting micro-trends that closely track our dwindling resources and the increasing ranks of the uber-rich.

Malthus is making a comeback among those who want to go green, and there is even a cultish sounding Voluntary Human Extinction Movement to convince us to go beyond Zero Population Growth, and instead embrace temporary negative population growth.

On the other hand, those with 8-digits in the bank are flaunting their wealth by having broods of kids. I guess this explains why the market for Different Strokes’ styled penthouses continues to boom in NYC.

The logic of this is that the very families who will likely use the most resources, with their 5,000+ square foot apartments and private jets, will overrun the folks who are the most extreme in conserving our resources.

Man, VHEMT seriously needs a less creepy name if they want to succeed. 😛
