The Slippery Slope

Posted in Uncategorized by echan on July 25, 2006

If you were expecting a child, and the doctor told you that the fetus had a form of cancer, where your child’s life expectancy was 56 years, would you abort it? I feel that most people would not.

Yet, it has become the norm in the medical community, as confirmed by one Harvard study, to promote the eugenic practice of aborting fetuses with down syndrome:

One mother in the study reported that her genetic counselor “showed a really pitiful video first of people with Down syndrome who were very low tone and lethargic-looking and then proceeded to tell us [in 1999] that our child would never be able to read, write, or count change.”

This campaign of misinformation needs to be combated with positive stories, such as this link from Miss Saheli, which documents the type of normal lives that people with down syndrome lead, and the fact, that in the last 23 years, advances in medical technology have extended their longevity from 25 to 56 years.

(Here’s my previous rant on this topic).

Thomas Pynchon Pulls a Douglas Coupland?

Posted in Uncategorized by echan on July 19, 2006

Though I love independent bookstores, such as the departing ACWLPB (the doctor’s on hand to announce the time of death later today), and the recently departed original Cody’s, even Pynchon “sightings” have evolved for the Internet age.

Edit: I am the only one sufficiently nerdy to care, but here’s an update, Pynchon wrote the blurb, which has reappeared, and a link to the Amazon page in question.

And the catchword of the day is Netflix guilt (see /., Lifehacker, and Newsweek). I sent back a Spike Lee joint (the mediocre 25th Hour) and the American version of the Office (two episodes watched) this week, after holding on to them for 5 months (at $14.99/month, that’s $75 for two DVD rentals). The only reason why I sent them back is I really really want to watch Maggie Cheung’s Clean, which just came out on DVD.
